Find the Right Centre Rail or Cross Rail for Your Bed Frame
Need to replace a broken, missing, or bowed centre rail (also referred to as a central rail or mid rail) or a set of cross rails? Our replacement rail kits are designed to restore proper support and stability—so you can repair your existing bed frame rather than replacing it.
At The Bed Slats Workshop, we manufacture a range of replacement centre/central rails and cross rail kits for different bed structures and slat systems. Because bed frames vary widely in layout, fixing points, and support heights, we offer multiple kit styles to suit common setups and help you keep your existing bed frame in use.
Solutions for different bed base types
Different bed bases require different support rails and fixing methods. Our range includes options suitable for:
- Pine bed slats (flat slats)
- Sprung bed slats
- Roll-out slats
- Bed boards
- Slatted bed bases
When a central rail is typically required
As a general guide:
When using pine bed slats (flat bed slats), any bed 1 metre wide or wider will typically require a centre/central rail for proper support.
Any bed frame with two rows of sprung bed slats will usually require a centre/central rail too—unless the sprung slats are part of a drop-in slatted base, where the base can be supported on cross rails instead (depending on the frame design).
Centre rails, mid rails and cross rails
Centre rails are also referred to as central rails or mid rails — they run lengthways down the middle of the bed to provide core support and keep slats level.
Cross rails are often found on French-style bed frames, where support commonly runs across the width of the bed, or where a drop-in slatted base is designed to sit onto cross members.
Why these supports matter
Centre/central rails and cross rails play a key role in:
Supporting the middle of the bed (where sagging often starts)
Keeping slats level and correctly spaced
Improving stability and reducing movement
Helping protect mattresses from uneven wear
If these supports fail, slats can drop, the frame can flex, and comfort can change noticeably.
Repair instead of replace
Our goal is to help you extend the life of your bed frame. In many cases, replacing a centre/central (mid) rail or fitting new cross rails is all that’s needed to restore strength and support—saving money and reducing waste.
Ideal for replacing existing centre rails (central/mid rails) or for use when manufacturing a new bed frame.
